Thread OP

Hi Gardeners,
I just moved to the Julian area of Eastern San Diego County and am planning to start some raised beds for veges, herbs and flowers. We will probably plant other drought tolerant flowers around the house too.

What are your favorites? We are near the tree line, about 2500 or 3000 feet.

Any other success tips re starting this homestead garden in this area are appreciated. My exoerience is in New York state and other parts if CA.

Thank you!

Justy

I would suggest you type your zip code into the USDA data base and find out what the zone is, or (my preference) buy a Sunset Western Garden Book, which would become your Bible. Julian has a very different climate than San Diego. SD doesn't get snow or freezing temps...Julian does.

You can get a better climate zone on line https://www.google.com/webhp?s...
It will explain the differences. You will find that Ca.is a very diverse state, climate wise. We have micro climates within micro climates, depending on how far you are from the coast, what side of the hill you live on, etc. I live in the LA basin, in USDA zone 10, but My zone 10 is a far different climate than Florida's zone 10, and what we can grow ( and when) is also very different.

Hi justinerenson. Welcome to NGA!

I suggested and Jon approved moving this thread to the Pacific Coast gardening forum.

We thought that more Californians and San Diegans would see it here. I hope so!

My favorite greens and vegetables might be useless to you. I live at sea level, a mile or two from the coast, way north of you, and we have drizzle 8 months of the year. A more different climate would be hard to find (except that our winter minimums are probably fairly similar - USDA Zone 8b, but Sunset Zone 5).
