I want to make a small container water garden for my back porch table. The container is about 12 inches across and 4.5 inches deep. Can someone give me suggestions for aquatic plants that could survive? Bog plants maybe?

Thanks!

I think most marginals could be grown in that, but stick with dwarf and small plants. I've grown acorus, small water iris, lobelia cardinalis, dwarf papyrus, and other things in containers such as this. I find that in anything less than 3 feet across I end up thinning and replanting every year to keep growth in check, though. 12 inches is small enough to easily be consumed by single plant unless managed.

Oenanthe javanica or water celery is nice in a container. During the winter the leaves are edged with pink and in hot weather they are a pale green and white. The photos we have in the data base here show an all green plant but the one I usually see around here is the variegated like in this link.

Love water celery, but it grows very fast and very large for me. My fish eat it, though, so I divide and dump into the fish tanks and ponds.

I never let any water plant loose. They do grow quickly and must be kept in smaller pots within the larger container.

Duckweed is phenomenal. It is edible by humans, pets, wild birds, and....ducks.

It is sticky (that's how it transports itself) and a total pest if it gets into bodies of water where it's not wanted. But I love it.

Anacharis is also a really good plant for eating but I personally don't like it as much. All my animals do, though.

Don't overlook watercress (Nasturtium officianale, NOT related to the flower called nasturtiums) either. It can grow fully submerged or partly submerged and I love it.

All the above are edible because I grow aquatic plants primarily for my creatures.
