Thanks for the great pictures. I envy you for your greenhouse. Maybe one of these days.
Last year I tried about 50 varieties of tomatoes and said to myself that it was way too many. However, this year I am going to plant 65 varieties. What's wrong with this picture!! I got really good results and loved it, so what's a few more?

I start the seeds inside under lights in the middle of March and plant outside after Mother's Day. I added the lights last year and what a difference it made.

I do have one advantage over you. Our summers usually get very warm starting in June, so things don't have to be protected.

Thanks herbie & mtngirl,

I started a new thread that lists the varieties that I'm planning to start from seed in a few weeks. Some are new for me this year and most are left over seeds from last year.

Joanna - I like the progressed pictures and set up. Did you print out the labels for one set of seedlings yourself or did the tags come with the seeds? I'm trying to figure out an easier way of labeling my seedlings without having to write them - if you saw my handwriting you'd understand! Smiling

With the move to go green has anyone ever considered using newspaper 'pots' Do you think they'll last long enough to grow in after transplant? I'd think it would have to be made really thick....

I start about 10 varieties of tomatoes under lights in early March, so they will be ready to plant out in mid-May. Although I can produce beautiful strong seedlings, we need a longer growing season Smiling Last year was so cool and rainy, I think it was late August before I got a ripe tomato.

Yes it's easy and rewarding . Here are some lovely romas . We are getting ready to harvest some onions, peppers, and a bunch of cilantro and make some salsa for us and our friends. We make at least one batch and some times two every week after the tomatoes start ripening.Salsa making last even after the fall frost start because I pick a bunch of nice green to partialy ripe tomatoes to save. On a good year those last till Xmas but usually around the first of dec. Quality goes down hill but by dec they are still much better than the cardboard store tomatoes.

I love growing them and eating them and I guess I grow them out of necessity becaus of the poor quality offered in the stores and now they are reaching 3 to four bucks a pound in the stores. Ernie

Wow--beautiful looking harvest, Ernie. Sounds like you had a bumper crop; here in the midwest, we're hoping for a much better growing season this year. Want to send some of that salsa out here? Smiling

our last frost has varied every year since we bought the house in 2004... from the beginning of May to the first week of June.. before I put this small greenhouse up.. I would be running trays in and out of the house.. made me nuts

I hear you on the last frost making a person nuts. I try to start some earlier and then kind of drag out the others hopeing I am close for the years planting. No GH here at the moment.

Why is everyone admiring Ernie's tomatoes when those adorable dogs are there? I'll take the golden retrievers any day.

I start lots then pick 120 for me and give the rest away. You can't have to many
