Squirrels are exceedingly clever at figuring out ways to get into the bird's food, aren't they? They don't bother the one with Nyjer seeds for the finches, but after the finches find it the number of birds keeps increasing until it's hard to keep up with filling it
. I set up an arch using bull panel wire for the vines last year and I've hung the feeders on that arch beginning with one last summer. I figured the dead vines and wire overhead would give the birds some protection from the hawks. A bonus has been that the squirrels haven't gotten into it yet. I think they don't really like to climb the wire and the feeders are suspended on those long S hooks as well. Probably they've just had enough natural food otherwise this year and so haven't been motivated enough to figure out how to get up to the feeder.
