Hello! I'm new to posting but have listened to a lot of the old podcasts and lurked and read lots of posts the last few months. Bought a house last year and am attempting to make the front and back yard more wildlife friendly. Happy to be here!

My father in law pointed out a small plant growing between the sidewalk and their flower beds and said it was milkweed. I carefully removed it and put it in a little pot. I just wanted to know if it for sure is milk weed and to make sure it's not any invasive sort for my region. I try really hard to keep it local when possible. I'd been really wanting to get some and my inlaws have said they often have monarch cats on their bushes.

Thanks in advance! Hopefully the pictures are clear enough.
*edit - Sorry! I probably should have posted to the existing milkweed thread.

Looks like tropical milkweed... Kind of is weedy... But... May as well enjoy it...
Very hard to do anything wrong with asclepias curassavica.

They root from cuttings, the seeds come up easily.... Only thing they can't take is winter cold... And down your way.... Not an issue.

After growing this one.... Maybe you could keep your eyes peeled for more desirable varieties.

Thanks for the response! I'm going to a nursery tomorrow that is known to have some natives, so I'm hoping I will find some other varieties, as well.

Hi, @Kalix. Welcome.

If you haven't gone shopping for milkweed yet, here's a warning. Be sure to ask if the MW has been 'treated'. If the answer is either 'yes' or 'I don't know', don't buy them. Some growers use something, I know not what, to get their milkweed started. This is not a good thing.

I asked and they said no. I guess I can only really take their word for it but I know the woman who owns the nursery has a good reputation.
I found a nice tuberosa while on my outing and am seriously considering going back for a few more for the backyard.

Hi Kalix, Welcome! from me too!

The plant in your photo reminds me of Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) which is a native!

When googling, I found this list of the different milkweeds native to Mississippi: http://www.growmilkweedplants....

And, you can find photos and information about them here in our database: https://garden.org/plants/sear...
