I want to make a dinosaur egg cake for my Nephews Birthday.

The idea is to first bake a square cake, let it cool, put in freezer to harden, then using dinosaur cookie cutters cut out Dino shape cake pieces. Then, line up the Dino cake pieces in an egg shaped cake mold, pour cake batter over, and bake.

The end result, an egg cake when you slice has Dino shape in the middle of each piece.

My problem is, if the Dino cake pieces flop over during baking it will ruin the entire cake, is there anything that will keep them balanced?

You have me confused. You cannot bake the cake twice. Even pouring batter over a baked cake is not the answer.

My suggestion. make your cake cut your shape icing it with green food coloring. Hit the dollar store and buy some dinos to decorate around the cake and table. If you want to go further pick up green marker and white table cloth while you are there and draw some dinos on the table.

I've not baked one of these but, perhaps, you could use bamboo skewers (only high quality & splinter free) or metal skewers to keep the dinos together and upright. One end of the skewer would have to protrude from the cake on one side so that, after being baked and cooled, you could carefully remove the skewers from the cake.

You can bake twice, the original recipie I got the idea from clearly states that. I know I could do a different cake but my mind is set on this way.

How would I get skewers to stay, if I put a hole in the cake mold batter will leak out.

Heavens, no, don't make a hole in the cake pan. That would be bad!

After you've baked and cut out the dinosaur cakes, then you line them up side by side (like the original recipe photo shows with the black bats.) Gently run a skewer through the baked dinosaur cake cutouts being sure that one end of the skewer will be right at the side of the egg-shaped pan. You may need two skewers to cover the length, like so:



Top view: Red line is the egg-shaped pan. Green block is 12 Dino cutouts in a row. 2 black lines are skewers.

Carefully move the skewered Dinos to the egg-shaped pan, adjusting skewers to fit just right.
Add batter & bake.
After the egg-shaped cake (containing the Dinos) has cooled and has been removed from the pan, then feel for the points of the skewers on the side of the cake and very gently remove them. I assume that you'll be frosting the cake, so you can use frosting to patch any small defect in the side of the cake. If you are using bamboo and are afraid of not finding the end in the similar-colored cake, you could dip the outward-facing tip of the skewer in some food coloring to make it easier to find. Again, frosting will cover all tiny blemishes!

The cake came out good and was very tasty, all vanilla. The Triceratops design (in green) was a little hard to make out but it stayed intact.

It looks perfect and fun

Nobody tried it except me, they ate the store bought birthday cake. Maybe they will have it once that is gone? I enjoyed it at least

Keith, after all your planning and work, that's terrible that no one tried it. I'm surprised that the birthday boy didn't want some. I'd have taken your cake instead of any store cake.
