Make sure you don't have wood mulch on top.

Make sure you use small crushed gravel for mulch. I used small pea gravel before, but I also had enough sand in hole. I now use the small crushed limestone gravel. The size I use is #8 which I get at a local place. You can even have some of the small crushed gravel in the hole.

Make sure you use enough sand (NOT PLAY SAND) in the planting hole. I use all purpose sand from Lowe's (inside store) in the masonry isle. It's a goldish color bag and I think they are 50 pounds.

Don't use a lot of compost in hole. I think I read that on High Country Gardens website, where I get a lot of information for Agastaches and xeric plants. You should check them out and read their info.

Can't think of anything else to say right now.

The soil here is pretty loamy, so I hope it's OK. I don't plant to mulch around their base, just nearby to keep the weeds at bay until more plants fill in.
I have High Country Gardens bookmarked but haven't looked there lately, thanks for the reminder.
They sell them at all the nurseries around here so I would think they work out alright.

Meant to tell you, I sprinkle some granulated gypsum in and around the flowerbeds, esp. for the Agastaches, because they need (like Lavenders, Salvias and Penstemons) a well drained soil and they don't like 'wet feet' (if you know what I mean). I always try and give my plants very well drained soil to be on the safe side, but I don't seem to always exceed.

I've been ordering from HCG since Spring 2005, but I envy that you can get their plants locally.

In my other garden I had heavy clay so had to add gypsum. Here I have some elevated beds that were here already and I am creating more with a few berms so that the iris and other plants drain well. The soil seems nice and loose. One area is lower and looks like it may retain more water so I need to add more soil. (Did you ever see my blog where we added tons of dirt already?)
This winter will be my first here so we'll see. We have our rainy season Nov. through about March or April, then dry all summer. That's where the sprinklers and hand watering take over. At my other house we averaged 15" of rain a year during that rainy season, here it's supposed to be 40", we are closer to the coast.
We have tons of nurseries here, it's ideal growing conditions and I recently got a resale license so can buy wholesale too, dangerous! LOL! Big Grin
