A few questions so I do it right and/or tell me I'm not expert enough to make such changes:

The plant in question is: Viola sagittata var. ovata

1) How to show alternate (experts disagree) latin name: Viola fimbriatula

2) Common name: I think the one there (Arrowleaf) is incorrect, and is only for Sagittata without the "var. ovata" (majority, but not universal, consensus of many sites I found with google). Do I just add the two common names "Sand Violet" and "Northern Downey Violet"? Or do I also remove the one I think is incorrect?

3) Should I wait longer on my ID thread before adding my non expertly IDed photos, especially the photo of rinsed off roots. If my plant isn't Norther Downey, I would defy anyone to distinguish based on the photo of blossom or leaves without more magnification than my camera can achieve. So that photo wouldn't confuse anyone looking to match or distinguish a plant later. But for all I know my plant is some other violet that exactly matches Northern Downey above ground and looks totally different below ground. So if I post that photo that distinguishes based on below ground and I'm wrong, I could mislead someone.

Viola fimbriatula should be added as a synonym. Our database entry can then be located under either name.

Since common names vary so much from person to person and place to place, add the one's you know the plant by. Arrowleaf violet can remain since, as you noted, it is used by some. You can give a thumbs up to the one you prefer. The common name with the most thumbs up is the name which shows in the title.

Add photos to a database entry when you are comfortable that the ID is correct. In this case you could add your plant to the entry for Arrow-leaved violet (Viola sagittata) adding a note that it might be Viola sagittata var. ovata in the caption. If or when the ID is confirmed you can propose the photos be moved to the correct entry.

Thanks. I'll do most of what you suggested. But not that bit. There is no chance my photos are Viola-sagittata without the var-ovata. They are either Viola-sagittata-var-ovata (AKA Viola fimbriatula) or they are some other Viola entirely, that happens to look (at least above ground) just like Viola-sagittata-var-ovata. So I'll put the photos where I think they belong.

With all that care, I still managed to copy a typo that is in a few of the sites google found (downey instead of downy). So many had the typo sagitatta instead of sagittata, that I was paying attention to not doing that one.
But I expect my re-edit will only slightly annoy whoever approves these.
