I call her my pet because she is so cute and plump, munching on fallen apples she holds in her hands and nibbles on. I didn't notice any damage that she did until this spring, when I waited, and waited for about 60+ new tulip bulbs to sprout. Nothing. Finally dug up the area to see if they had rotted or what. Nothing at all there! It was a nice loose bed that I had dug up not far from her home tunnel. It took me awhile to find marmots listed as lovers of tulip bulbs - supposedly they can dig and eat as fast as you can turn your back! She doesn't seem at all interested in my older plantings - I counted 600+ older tulips in my yard this year. Guess I will have to try some kind of protection for the fancy parrot tulips I have ordered for this fall.

So sorry to hear your 'pet' ate your tulips!!!

Time for a new pet perhaps? Or maybe just some new tulips with 'pet' protection??

At our botanical garden they horticulturist coated his bulbs with Planskydd. I use it in its liquid form to repel moose from my front gardens. He did the same, let them dry out, then planted them. We have tons of spring bulbs blooming this spring. Moose generally pull up tulips and such as a special treat. lol

I lost my spring bulb flowers to voles last spring.
I managed to deter the squirrels from them, but the voles came along in spring and unearthed them. All the critters then had a field day !
This year I am trying to deter voles with castor oil. I will soak the tulip bulbs in a solution and also apply a soil drench of the castor oil solution. I am also spraying fences and trees with "Predator" spray.
The voles chewed roots on two peonies so might apply near them too.

There is a granular product which is sold to deter voles and moles which has castor oil embedded in the granules. I have not found it for sale here.
