I am planning to add some spring blooming crocus to my garden this fall and it got me thinking, why not "layer" the planting zones with autumn blooming crocus too...

Other than perhaps the planting time being slightly different, is there any reason why these 2 can't share a planting site?

Site conditions would be full sun all season. My only thought would be incompatible moisture/dormancy needs?

Would love to get thoughts on the matter. Smiling

I have grown mine side by side for 2 years now and have had no problems.

I also grow them side by side, and have considered layering them as you mentioned but haven't tried it yet. They enjoy the same conditions in the garden. While the planting times are a bit different, if you make sure to leave space for the spring flowering varieties, you can wait till the autumn flowering crocus are in bloom (they typically bloom a few weeks after planting) to plant so you'll know where to dig.

@gemini_sage

Perfect. Just gotta remember to leave the space!

I have found myself on more than one occasion without the proper site/space for a certain plant because I forgot what I originally planned to put there (and instead filled the space with something else)... *Blush*

I do the same thing all too often, a spot in the garden that appears empty is very hard to resist! Hilarious!

Oops! How did that work? With how shallow Iris are planted, I would think the daffs might just push them right out of the soil?

Oh they did push through, and made for a really messy look with all the flopping daff foliage while the irises were blooming. The crowded foliage also caused some rot among the irises. A mistake I hope not to repeat, but knowing my memory that's probably a pipe dream Hilarious!

Guess that's why daffs and Iris aren't typically listed as companions Whistling Hilarious!

Actually, I planted my iris in front of my daffs to cover the dying foliage. Same with tulips.

I don't know what changes the words that are typed in. Sometimes I'm in a hurry and don't preview first. Sure enough, there is a silly word in there! (Long explanation of a word that got changed in a short post...) 😮
