This is an awesome clematis she is about 6 years old here grows in morning sun and mid day
no afternoon sun..
grows in humid and hot summers in alabama.
when I planted her I dug out all clay dirt and disposed of it.
The hole was at least 2 foot wide and 2 foot deep...
I added bought sand
a large bag of very good potting soil
added one cup of lime
6 big handfuls of black kow compost...manure
This black kow compost does not burn..
it comes in a bag bought at Lowe's store.
I worked that together and then poured a bucket of water in the
bottom of the hole and let that settle...
then planted the clematis...in early spring...
Clematis here are not sitting in wet ground in the winter months..
I do water each clematis slowly with 2 gallons of water each week during hot summer months
at the base of the vine..
This one gets pruned on March lst each year ...down to about 18 inches..
