If you are battling fleas - this might help you win the war.

I had been fighting the flea war for decades with all my cats and dogs -- and always losing. My two cats, Barney & Feif had never set foot out of doors but somehow, they got fleas. I probably brought them in on my clothes. I tried all the spot treatments and they sort of worked for about 2 weeks and then my kitties were scratching again and I'd see them on their faces. I tried pretty much everything that was available. Nothing was working and it was very stressful to all of us trying to administer it.

Last year I heard about a product called Capstar. It kills 90% of fleas on your critters but only works for 24 hours - it's not an insecticide - it uses a nicotine something that interferes with the nervous system of the fleas (I use Greenies Pill Pockets to feed them the pills). I started using that along with Advantage. I'd give the cats the pill and 2 days later treat them with Advantage. It was good for about 3 weeks but the fleas always came back and I really didn't like the greasy smelly stuff and neither did the cats. I had to wrestle them to the ground then fight to put that stuff on them.

About 8 months ago someone told me about Program - a monthly liquid you add to their food. It doesn't kill fleas but makes flea eggs sterile and according to everything I had read, it takes about 3 months to break the cycle and to really notice a difference.

Last October I started to use Capstar twice a month with Program once a month. By December I only had to use the Capstar once and haven't had to use it since. By January the fleas were totally gone and I was delighted. Since then I've only had to use the Capstar once and that was early this month. I'm thinking that old flea eggs in the carpet are probably starting to hatch with the warmer weather.

The kitties and I are now all happy campers .. no knock down dragged out fights trying to fight the fleas.

I've been treating the yard or fleas so I don't bring them indoors. But this is a Keeper (starred) in case one hops on for a ride! Thumbs up

Another thing that helps is keep a flea collar in your vacuum cleaner. Kills the eggs that you pick up.

I used to do that a long time ago - I think I'll start doing that again. Thanks for the reminder.

Dana, putting mothballs (napthalene) in your vacuum is really not a good idea at all .. especially for cats who are especially sensitive to napthalene fumes . The fumes are toxic not only to animals but to humans as well and the vacuum will disperse them through the air.
