I just wanted to share my fountain project that I recently completed. We had an old bird bath that we were going to replace with a store bought water fountain but instead decided to incorporate the existing bird bath into a water fountain. I very much enjoyed this project and I hope you like my creation.

Beautiful! I have to wonder though how you will keep it clean and algae free. Ease of maintainance is something I have learned to consider over the years.

I think it's lovely, Bob. At pet stores, you can buy algae control products in the aquarium section.

I love your project, Bob. Nice job, and the lighting for night makes it even more special.

I don't know if it's true, but the place I buy pond and fountain equipment told me that acids or algaecides in fountains would ruin the pumps. I haven't tested that. Our main large fountain in AZ has to be drained and cleaned maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I haven't had any problems with smaller fountains.

I have been filling with water from my pool and that seems to be working well. I was using water from the hose at first and the algae was accumulating very quickly. The top part is very shallow and in the hot southern Florida sun is heating up very quickly and the rocks get very warm as well. Since adding the pool water (daily if you can believe) the green algae is gone. Other than having to fill daily this fountain is fairly hassle free so far. Again, thanks for the comments and interest in my little fountain project.

Interesting that you are using your pool water. If that works then I could probably use chlorine, acid and algaecide in my fountain.

I have a 5-gallon bucket that I just dip in the pool and then carry around to the front, seems to be working well. The chlorine level is very low but just enough to keep the algae in check. I don't think the water would harm any wildlife because we have cats that drink out of our pool all the time. They actually prefer the pool water over bowls of water that we've set out for them. I don't think birds or animals will be interested in the fountain water anyway but will see, time will tell.
