Doing a landscape for a friend's newly built home using primarily mature divisions of perennials from their last home but there is a small, skinny bed between the garage and front porch roughly 15" wide and her hosta varieties go waaaay too huge for more than a single season so looking for some small hostas that aren't true miniatures. I'd like to try 3 or 4 that are completely different and mix in a pack of annuals for summer color

Any favorites that stay relatively small? I have a great resource nearby but it sure help to have some ideas before actually shopping.

Thanks! Smiling

Loved my Blue Mouse Ears but forgot to stick the pot in the flowerbed and lost it this Winter with it being on a covered porch. Slightly smaller than I'm looking for but I think I can still purchase ground-grown locally and it would be a great for one of the smaller pots I plan to use in the bedding area.

Thanks for the ideas, easier than searching the entire database! Thumbs up

Rainforest Sunrise, Maui Buttercup, Popcorn stay rather small and are not rampant growers.

A few of my favorites are Hawkeye, Rainbows End, Grand Prize and London Fog. These may get bigger in good soil, but in my sandy soil they are less than 15".

Lunch break and thanks for the suggestions! I see a few that are on my local grower's list and I'm sure he'll have some suggestions as well. Doubt I'll get over there 'til tomorrow or Sunday. I shouldn't complain about being busy but I really need to get my own veggies in the ground! D'Oh!

I will post some pics this weekend of the varieties selected.

Thank You!

Well after getting an actual measurement I have another 10" to work with and visited Cory's Hosta Gardens here in SW Ohio.

My 3 selections are larger than what I really wanted but suitable for this year and perhaps a few so in the meantime I will be searching for contrasting varieties that to hold within 28"...

Great visit although I failed to take my camera. Mr. Cory is a great guy with a true passion for the plants he grows and I met a very nice couple of gardeners that hybridize daylilies. They're nearby as well so again great visit! I bought one pre-potted variety in a manageable size "First Frost"

And Mr. Cory, 89 years young dug "September Sun"

and 3rd and last "Captain Kirk"---I want one for myself!

Again I'm pretty sure I'll be looking for more compact varieties to replace these choices but when an 89 year old gardener shakes his head "no" and says "Eh, If you want one I'll sell you one" I lean towards giving in to plants he points to! He's a great guy!
