I would love to grow such a beautiful plant, but Heucheras seem so unhappy in my garden!

This one is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. The color is spectacular. My garden is heavily planted with daylilies and finding foliage in other colors to mix in to break up all the green is a challenge and a necessity. So far I've been lucky, I only lost one heuchera over the past winter.

I love the contrasting colors too, and Dolce Blackberry Ice is quite a stunner!

I think the heat of summer may be what Heucheras don't like about my gardens. Or perhaps it is too much light combined with summer heat. I am trying several Heucheras in pots this year, plus my first ever Heucherella, which I put in the ground.

This far north I can't leave plants in pots over the winter, they have to go in the ground. We do stay cooler then areas further south during the summer so I'm sure that helps. I'm also trying to plant them where they won't get baked by the sun all day. Both sides of the garden are shaded now that the surrounding trees have grown taller. This gives them either afternoon or morning shade. The one I did loose was in an area that had more sun than the others last year.

Good luck with the heucherella! I'm not sure I've seen them available at the local nursery...I'll have to look

My tentative plan is to keep the coral bells in containers in the dry shade of some thirsty red maples during the summer and then move the coral bells to the ground in early September. The challenge will be to find a shady spot that isn't like a desert.
