Another dollar store conversion they call it a colander/strainer.
I picked up a few of these about 8" wide and 4" deep and already has holes in it.

Those are handy to cover small plants and seed sowings from critters.
Sometimes I winter sow directly into containers and use a colander to protect the sowing.

I've bought several different ones to use as containers. So far the only one that's actually been put to use for a plant is a wire contraption that came from Wal-Mart. It was sold as a colander, but, to me, it's more like an oblong rectangle strainer with fold-up handles. It was inexpensive and has worked well for one of the clearance orchids.

In the hanging in the background of the orchard is that a hard-hat like worn in a construction area ?

Yes. Rescued from a garbage dump. Fiberglass.
