Hi there,I hope I'm posting this in the right place,if not I do apologize.I just received an adenium I purchased a while ago from ebay.I have potted it in a grit and sterile topsoil mix and watered it.Im delighted with it but I have noticed a black area on one of the branches, it could be rot or a dead area, Im just worried that it could spread and im not sure what to do.Should I clip it or leave it alone.I've posted a pic of my plant.I will post a pic of affected area later as im out atm...any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Eoin.

Eoin,
If you are speaking of the small branch on the left. I would slice it off with a razor blade (cleaned with rubbing alcohol) as close to the base. It looks like it could be rot, but either way you will stop it from moving further down and into the caudex. This small branch removal will not effect the look of this plant.
With using the potting soil in with your mix for soil. Make sure that you allow it to dry back well before re watering it.
At the same time it would be worth sending a photo and note to the seller of the plant and effected branch. This is only a safeguard for yourself. Not saying anything is wrong with your plant, but worth having it documented.

Hello Eoin, do as Rick suggested, and also after you cut it, and after it oozes some of its juice, you can also dab a little cinnamon on the fresh cut as fungicide. Please wear gloves when you do the cut, its sap can cause skin irritation.

I have the job done tarev, but thank you.Unfortunately I don't have access to cinnamon this evening as its almost 11pm.I will get some tomorrow and apply it,albeit a bit late.I have posted a pic of the area where the limb was taken.Hopefully it will dry out.I watered it again today as the soil mix had completely dried since Its initial watering. We're experiencing a few hot days in ireland atm at 26°c average so it is out in that.Hopefully I dont kill it.Thank you for your input.

Those temps are very much okay Eoin. Once it is more acclimated and grows more leaves it can take in much more higher temps and to be watered well. Mine is outdoors right now and our temps at a sizzling dry heat of 104F (40C). So I have to water it everyday here, and treat it like a tropical plant.

Just give time for your plant to adapt to your conditions, and if you have more rainshowers expected while no new leaves yet has formed, protect it from the downpour, till it is ready. How are your overnight temps? It is safe to leave it outdoors as long as your overnight temperature is above 50F (10C).

Night time temps can fluctuate a bit here but they are above 50 f atm.The good weather is to break on Wednesday so it will be back to rain and cooler temps for a few days, so it will be brought inside for protection.104,now that is hot,we never experience temperatures like that.A little over 86-f would even be unusual.I put it in a gravel and enriched topsoil mix and while it seem to drain quickly the mix does stay damp for a few days.Im afraid of damaging the roots so im trying to be extra careful with the watering regime.Hopefully I learn quickly Smiling thanks again.

I would wait for it to grow new leaves Eoin before watering again. Your Adenium may have a leaf but may still be dormant, unless that is an actual leaf you saw sprouting and opening up, then it is awake.

Yes, it is our blistering hot heat wave temps..will go on for this whole week Rolling my eyes. Thankfully it is weather Adenium enjoys! I get my blooms here in June to July during our hot and super dry summer months.

Hi Eoin! Glad to read the wound of your Adenium has healed!

Are you able to bring it gradually outdoors now? It would benefit from some bottom heat to encourage those roots to grow and to further wake it up.

Hi tarev, I bring it out any opportunity I get but it doesnt seem to be doing anything atm.I have stopped watering it and it's caudex is firm. Our weather is very broken with frequent showers so it's not out as often as id like.Any tricks to get it going? It's only averaging 20deg c here at the moment.I do have a heat mat,the type used for reptiles, I wonder might that help?I planted 15 seeds last week and 9 have sprouted so far so at least something is happening Smiling

Hi Eoin, the only thing I can think of is to let it feel the outdoors all day/all night long. It has to feel the temperature variance too. But protect from rain, if it has no new leaves yet. Good to know caudex is staying firm. 20C is not bad, that is our Spring time temps here, and it is just a bit of a wait, then once those new leaves show, then you can step up watering.

The heat mat helps for sure, but it really likes much more heat and has to start acclimating more outdoors.

I am not good at seed level. Find the Adeniums Chat thread in the Adenium forum, the other growers who have done seed growing are there. They can help you more about it. Smiling
