Grow Your Own Turmeric from the Grocery Store

If you've ever eaten East Indian food, you've probably tasted turmeric, the bright yellow, pungent spice. It's usually found in powdered form, but it can also be eaten freshly sliced from the root. Would you believe that you can grow it yourself from tubers that are found in most international markets? If that doesn't catch your attention, you can also grow these same tubers/rhizomes into lovely blooming gingers for your summer garden before you harvest the roots in fall for turmeric.

Welcome @anni_cree! We have a few large Mexican market stores here, as well as some international markets. They seem to carry the freshly dug roots and depending on the season they can be very small to huge pieces.

I found some organic Turmeric at Smart & Final, but it never sprouted.

Turmeric purchased from the store sometimes has been subjected to an growth inhibiter.. Best to purchase a few and give a good cleaning.. I use hydrogen peroxide. Place the cleaned pieces into a zip bag and then place in a warm place and check periodically to see if eyes are forming.. This might take a while.. So just be patient.. I have done this and then placed into soil out of 5 or 6 pieces 1 produced leaves.. Although this method will produce it is probably better to buy from other sources.. Good luck and happy gardening..
