Hi! This is my second year with my 2 clematis plants. This Spring they grew beautifully with big purple flowers! Now both plants have lost flowers and one is turning brown and crunchy!!! Not sure how to save them or if I can. Other houses have such vibrant ones. What could I do???????

Are they getting enough water? Are the roots shaded? Can you post a picture?

Most likely some of the stems got damaged by some creatures like slugs. When slugs scrub clematis stems some of them show damage right away, some show it later when temperatures hotter. Look at your plants. Is it the whole stem gets dry. If this is the case cut it and don't worry. New stems will emerge. If it's just lower leaves get brown that's pretty normal too. Just don't overwater or overfertilize . Even if (in the most unfortunate case ) the whole plant would succumb there's 90% chance of getting back in spring. They are tough and want to live and grow.

Oh!! Thank you! That is good news! I will go ahead and trim them back! I really don't want to lose this pretty plant. Do you think I should get a bigger trellis so that they are able to spread out? They've outgrown this small one, or does it matter???

About trellises - it's up to you. If you don't provide support then clematis grows as ground cover. It's such a versatile plant.
