Now that I have purchased a dozen new varieties of Hosta which come in various sizes and shapes I feel like I need to rearrange some of my plants.

(So glad they are planted in the ground inside pots.)

I made a list of all my Hosta from Largest to smallest including a note of color and whether or not it is sun tolerant and I have begun to design my final arrangement on paper.

It would be helpful if everyone could post pictures of their favorite hosta garden layout and of course which Hosta look really nice together.

If you post pictures please include the name of the plant or companion plants and approx. how old they are.

Also, can someone explain to me why the 10 foot rule?

If you can't identify it from 10 feet away don't have it in your garden...

I have never heard of that rule before. Is it specific to hostas? I think if you like it, have it in your garden.

Just for color contrast fun...

I have a young
'Fragrant Blue' and 'Silver Bay' right next to each other. Fragrant Blue leaves are on the bottom and Silver Bay leaves are on the top. Silver Bay is a bluer color. Probably the Bluest of all my Blue.

I think the 10 foot rule simply means that if you are going to add something new to an already established garden, you want it to be something that will stand out from 10 ft. away. But then I may be completely wrong.

I've done a couple of talks about hostas to garden clubs. The second one that I did is posted on my family web space as a pdf. (The original presentation was a Power Point file). The pdf version, of course, has none of the off-the-cuff remarks, but a lot of the text is incorporated into the slides and there's quite a large section on planning the garden.

You always have the answers for me.

I have read a lot about designing the shade garden but in the end it has to look good to your eyes. You are in a perfect position because you can play with them in the pots.

I used the ten ft rule because at one point they were putting out hostas with names like crazy that really were not special just another name. I felt it was just a marketing ploy. Plus I like different in my hosta garden. I really like looking at the plant and say "Wow that is so pretty" "Not oh it is as pretty as the other 50 blues, green, green and white, yellow etc, in the garden"

Yes! And that's what I have in mind.

I want each section and each corner to be uniquely beautiful and designed.... each specimen Hosta can be placed in a way that shows it off the best.

So walking through my premises Captures the attention as you look to right or left.

I don't just want another slope that looks just like the last.

I really liked this one with the oriental lilies. Not sure if this is one of your gardens but ideas like this come to mind because it almost looks like the lily blooms are in the Hosta.
