I have been more than pleased with how successful my container water garden has been this year. It's beautiful with the water lily, bog plants and floater. The little "pond" is in balance with clear water, almost no algae, great plant growth and health and the mosquito fish are striving and multiplying. That being said next year I would like to try to grow Lotus instead of the lily and all the other plants. I know some of you have grown in containers so I would appreciate your thoughts, opinions and any advice that you might be willing to share.

My experience is that lotus get big and dominate whatever soil they can find. I've placed smaller varieties in little water gardens, but ultimately had a hard time with anything less than 25 gallons of water for the lotus alone. I do have a 35 gallon preformed pond sunk into my perennial garden which houses a large lotus that blooms very well and has been going for ten years or so. I still think it's possible to go smaller with the miniature lotus varieties, I just haven't hit on the formula for doing it yet.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Thanks Paul. I have containers that size. The one I have the water garden in now is about 70 gallons. If I decide on Lotus it will be the only thing in the container.
