We've had lots of rain here the last 3 or 4 weeks............some were real frog stranglers. Had water in my middle cellar, but the sump pump appeared to keep up in the back cellar, where you could float a boat with the water that would run in that one. Yuck.

Seems like most everyone around got most of their hay made without rain. And the 3rd week of July was the county fair, and it ALWAYS seems to rain at least once during fair week. This year it rained 3 days. The rodeo was just about done the opening night of the fair when it started. That one had the potential for being really bad, but other than some wind locally and heavy rain, it wasn't too bad. Some trees down...........the usual.

The corn is looking beautiful, and the hay is growing gangbusters with all the rain we've been having.

Our renter brought 32 heifers to put in our pasture here at home, and a week later brought another 12 for the pasture up at the other farm. They are all bred, so thankfully no bull at either place like last summer. Don't trust those suckers at all.

So, what are the rest of you farmers up to?

My hobby tree farming probably barely counts as 'gardening' in most circles.

I need to get on slip-potting pawpaw into gallon pots. They are the most cold blooded of all the trees I grow out from seed or propagate. I have a just erupted pot pf peach. but those won't go into individual pots till spring of '18.

My eldest ran down a plum with her rider and broke off two volunteers. I should repot them too.

In preparation for the Big Move I've sold my flock through craigslist. Sad to see them go but I did find an excellent person for my roo, Pretty Boy. I'm worried now about my barn cats - I don't think they could acclimate to the new place. I told our realtor that I'd make a deal for new owners to keep them.

Plenty of rain here too and now we're having mild temps - odd for August. The pears look ready to pick but the apple trees have been denuded by the Japanese Beetles - really bad this year. No veg garden this year due to the Big Move.

I'm told I can have 6 hens at the new place -it's not rural but a subdivision. Not sure how we'll adjust to 'city' living

Ha ha Anna -- pretty sure she means a rooster. Although I do live close to a kangaroo farm, so who knows.

When I visited my friend from another site that lives in Kentucky, part of her directions were "go past the camel farm.........."..............LOL

It is funny how we can see all sorts of odd animals in our areas or where we visit. We used to live near a place that raised buffalo. On our trips back to AZ we go past Emu and Lama farms.

We too had a lot of rain this spring and the pastures went wild. It was also quite windy which limited my ability to treat the weeds with herbicides. I am still trying to catch up on the shredding. The favorite tractor has had various mechanical ailments which delayed the process. I can't decide whether to add to the cow herd. I let it dwindle during the drought of 2011 and have never bought replacements - hence the overstock of grass. We also lost two of our admirable old race horse pensioners this summer due to age and unsoundness. In their place are a couple of new rehabs. (Horses, however, are poor lawnmowers at best.) I did buy pullets this spring to increase my flock of hens and they have now begun to lay so there are lots of what one of my egg customers calls "practice" eggs available. What it all amounts to is the same old same old - but I love our farm and can't imagine doing anything else.

It may be same old to you, but I love hearing all of the details. We used to have chickens and horses and I miss them all. I may have chickens again, but we are done with the horses. I was thinking of a goat to help us keep the grasses down, but I'd probably have to stake the goat to keep it from eating the things I want to save! Anyway, please give us updates on what you're up to at your farm.

Well, we are supposed to having a milking job next weekend........from Friday thru Sunday, but we may not have to do that one. She hasn't gotten back to me yet. The SU has to feed cattle for the neighbor he helps sometimes as they are going away for a week for their anniversary. I have to go down sometimes; if he has to put hay in the hay bunks, I have to go and open/watch gates for him. They got out for him one day before he could get back and shut the gate, so that put an end to him trying to do it by himself. I don't blame him.............he called me and said "get your ass down here and help me get these damn things back in". He was 3 miles away..........LOL Luckily the guy had the gate shut to the 100 acre cornfield, or we'd still be chasing and rounding up (and that was last year.............)

Haven't had any relief milking jobs since January which is ok. I don't know when we'd have had time to do them.

It's nice you can get the extra jobs when you have the time, Anna. It sure beats not being retired!
