I note that when I misspell a word in a post, I get the squiggly red line under it, but there doesn't seem to be a mechanism in place (or if so I don't know how to use it) to easily check and correct spelling. Am I missing something? I end up opening a new tab and figuring out the correct spelling off-site then coming back to correct. I'm rather tweaky about using proper language, which seems to becoming a lost skill.

It's limited and not always correct. Sometimes you have to click the 'add' button when you know it's the right spelling. Every time I wrote daylily, I got the red "wrong spelling" and it suggested day lily. I finally 'added' it so it would stop annoying me.
I have found that when I see the wrong spelling squigley line, I click on it, and see the "show correct spelling' but it doesn't show anything. I'm on Firefox when that happens.
As Karen alluded to, this is normally a function attached to your browser (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, etc). Between them, the dictionary/spell correct function might differ.
