Tusk is on my ever growing wish list. Glad to hear it's such a good plant. I'll have to move it to the top! Smiling

I got a single fan of Tusk last summer on the LA. No one bid against me and I got it for an really reasonable price. Smiling

It arrived looking great, but did poorly in a pot. In desperation to save it, I popped it into my dip bed (the only bed I had completed at the time) I thought I lost it, but when late fall came, I had some nice, seedling height growth (perhaps 6 inches). It is well mulched, and I am hoping it survives the winter. I really don't expect it to bloom this year, but hope it survives. It is not in the bed I wanted it in - I had planned to put it near my house so the warmth from the house would help it through the winter since it is an EV. On the other hand, this winter has been pretty mild so far, so I am crossing my fingers.

Joy, I consider my yard a "work in progress" - the same as my house.

And I know what you mean by the LA- I bid on 3 last week, thank goodness, I was outbid on all 3 auctions! With my son's wedding looming, I REALLY shouldn't even be on that site! ~Jan

Jan, I don't have it, but I have seen the same thing with TUSK shrinking down and thinking it's gone then up pops some little fans. The whole clump didn't do it when it was divided, just some of the fans. It may be a dormancy thing related to heat or stress. I don't know if the one you got had just been divided or not but some daylilies will shrink down to next to nothing after being divided where most don't looked phased at all other than the old foliage yellowing and dying off.

I have to add another one that is an excellent grower in my garden and that is the new stout medal winner Northwind Dancer. It is well deserving of that award.

I have TUSK and last summer it totally died back to one little leaf, and I couldn't stand it so I dug it up and potted it. It really came back to life in the pot, so in another month I plan to replant it in a better spot where the daylilies all seem to do well. And then hopefully it will become like my other favorite spider, FREE WHEELIN', which it will be close to. I also have NORTH WIND DANCER and it dies back because it's a dormant, but each year the plant seems to be getting bigger, so hopefully it will do well this year.

I'm getting anxious for a new daylily season, so I'm going to look through last summer's pictures and try to pick some favorites. They'll all be from the first part of the season because our summer turned horribly hot and dry in mid July and everything dried up and looked awful!!!

BALI WATERCOLOR always a favorite! Love the color.

BOLD AWAKENING is an evergreen that looks awful in the spring but bounces back and blooms well.
Thumb of 2012-01-11/annred97/66d50a

CAJUN CHRISTMAS by Gunda Abajian does really well here and even produced some nice seeds (got very few this year because of the 100+ temps)

CAPACITY FOR WONDER Love the pink glow! A favorite Hanson daylily.

HANDWRITING ON THE WALL by Karol Emmerich is another favorite.

HEART EXHIBIT by Linda Michaels is a bitone and the petals pinch--both characteristics I love.

HEAVENLY CURLS Love the twisting curling never the same look twice!

OK, that's 10 and I'm only half way through the alphabet.... Hope to see more favorites from others!

Thanks Margaret and Dot! Also Dot, I was interested to see that your avatar seedling was out of SO MANY STARS. It's lovely! I've gotten some pretty seedlings putting SMS pollen on PIANO MAN. They're not particularly unique, but they do well for me and the top one is pod fertile, so I may continue to work with them. I planted a few seedlings from a sibling cross last summer so will see what shows up. That's the fun of hybridizing! I think I may try SO MANY STARS in some more crosses next summer as well. I've been hesitant to show any seedlings with all the gorgeous ones that Lyle and Fred (Spunky) and a few others have shown. But maybe if I do, others will be encouraged to post theirs as well...... Most of my selected seedlings so far are diploid UFs. So, I'm especially interested in what others may be doing in that area.

Love KLAATU BARADA NIKTO -- both the daylily, which I also have, but its name is that famous quote from the original movie THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. I was so disappointed in the remake of that movie because they left that out -- how could they do that? And your JELLYFISH JEALOUSY looks fantastic -- and your seedlings are wonderful too!

I love the names Dan Bachman comes up with. I didn't know the story behind that one. One year he had a series named for Far Side comics--FIFI SAVES THE DAY, BOBBING FOR POODLES, MY BRAIN IS FULL, etc. Here is MY BRAIN IS FULL:
