I think that old phrase 'caveat emptor ' definitely applies when buying plants . The odds are often stacked against the casual buyer getting their first plant . A lot of the bad practices are not that obvious .
Our local garden centre is full of cacti with those fake straw flowers . They sell them in sealed containers ( coffins) they sell them wilh guled on top substrates, painted flowers , pots with groups of wildly incompatible plants , incorrect or no Id, no information or totally wrong information , rubbish or incorrect soil, selling them already infected with bugs or diseases
the list of shitty practices goes on and on
At least if someone is curious or lucky enough to end up asking a question somewhere like here , they will start to get on the right track . That was certainly the case for me
Which is why we have to check ourselves a little bit from putting the boot into someone straight away when they rock up with what seems like a idiotic question or a plant that is in big trouble due to poor care
