Hi for some reason I haven't had any success with sowing S. regla seeds. The first time I added a little perlite to the seed starting mix and they still rotted. The second time I add mostly perlite to the mix and the seeds rotted. I don't know what I'm doing wrong? Does anyone have any experience with this particular variety? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

@TexasPlumeria87 Cameron,

I found a couple of links with some information about regla. Hope they help, otherwise, I'm sorry I can't be of any help.

@lovesblooms,

Could you share your experience with Salvia regla? I noticed that you sowed seeds and that they have germinated.

Thanks for the links Marilyn. I guess I just sowed them at the wrong time of the year? I'll try sowing them in Spring to see if I have some success? I was at least hoping to get a seedling or two because it's such a pretty plant and drought tolerant from what I've read. Thumbs up

I grew Salvia regla 'Royal' once during the 2013 season from a plant that I got from Flowers By The Sea.

Orange Mountain Sage (Salvia regla 'Royal')

I wasn't able to capture the deep rich color that Kermit (of FBTS) shows on his website, but I was in love with the color and the flowers.

It's definitely a stunning salvia. The color really stands out. I didn't know there were other cultivars of salvia regla. Was your plant a fast grower?

I received the plant in my spring order and got it into a 20 inch container (think I had another salvia in there too) and the first bloom was 9/5. I didn't get it into the container right away, so maybe it was "on time" for the first flower on 9/5. I'm pretty sure it's a late summer - early fall bloomer. Don't know if it would've bloomed earlier or later than 9/5, as it was my first time growing a regla type of salvia. I'd love to grow another regla type of salvia again some day.

FBTS offers

'Royal' http://www.fbts.com/salvia-reg...
'Huntington Gardens Form' http://www.fbts.com/salvia-reg...
'Jame' http://www.fbts.com/salvia-reg...
Queretaro form http://www.fbts.com/salvia-reg...

Looks like he out of them at the moment. You can the "Email when back in stock" button, list your email addy and then be notified by email when it's back in stock with any of his plants that are out of stock.

Have you ordered from FBTS before? http://www.fbts.com/

Being zone 8a, do you get frost and/or freeze? I know you have a lot longer growing season and some plants I grow as annuals, you can grow as perennials.

Thanks for the information. Thumbs up I have a few late summer early Fall blooming plants, which is great when my other plants are winding down. The seeds I got are from the Jame form. I've never ordered from FBTS before but I bookmarked it for future reference.
I'm winter we get frosts and dressed but out average daytime temperature is 54, though last winter it got to 11 a couple of times which killed a few of my plants.

I did sow the seeds several times and they germinated on heat mats like any of the rest of my indoor-sown seeds over winter. But I have never been able to grow them to beyond the first pairs of leaves, unfortunately. I've also heard (was it you, @Marilyn ?) that there are sometimes albino seedlings. Haven't had it happen to me.

@lovesblooms

No, it wasn't me that stated about albino seedlings.

Thanks for replying. I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

Thanks for replying @lovesblooms Thumbs up You won't believe what I found yesterday, a pale salvia regla seedling. I dug through the mix and I couldn't find any of the seeds so I assumed they rotted, so I set the empty pot on a shelf. I looked yesterday and saw a pale seedling has sprouted. I think I sowed the seeds 12 days ago? I hope I can get it to grow past the first pair of leaves? The lady that sent me the seeds told me they need excellent drainage and that I needed to amend my clay soil with lots of crushed granite and compost. I'll probably try to keep it indoors this year since it's late in season to plant seedlings?

I hope you can keep it alive, too, Cameron! I'm not sure if I have any seeds left but I'll be trying again this year if so.
