October will usher in our first frost..............I hope it isn't in the next week because I don't have any plants moved to the greenhouse. Yuck. :>)

Farmers are in the field here..........the soybeans are being combined and the many acres of corn will be next. The last couple of weeks has seen corn silage being chopped and either put into silos, trench silos, or silo bags. It's been a busy time, and the weather has been beautiful for it.

We had a bit of a rainshower this morning; it is quite dry here and a nice soaker would do the ground good, but I don't think anyone really wants that right now.

What's going on in everyone else's corner of the world?

Chilling down at night (into the 40s) but I don't expect frost anytime soon. Usually my first frost is mid month and a real killing frost is not until early November. I tend to get a lot of 'teasers' before the big one. So, I'm working on fall cleanup and waiting for the leaves to fall so I can get them chopped for winter mulch.

Corn was being harvested until today and thanks to the rain the farmers won't make it back in until next week at earliest.

We made the big move: 1000 miles south...and the homestead is up for sale. Temps here are still H.O.T. but they should start to turn by the end of the month. Sugar Cane harvest is underway and I have to re-learn how to miss cane trucks that stop suddenly without warning....

We've downsized the house and the acreage too - now a little less than an acre. I found it hysterical riding the mower to cut the grass. Our new little town says I can have 6 hens, no roosters. I wonder if they know about the really energetic rooster one street over....he beats dawn by an hour, lol.

I sure do miss the farm....left pears and apples on the trees and am depending on good neighbors to keep their eye out. Big change. But this winter I will not be shoveling snow. period.

Congratulations, Catherine. It's always hard to leave your old place, but it will be very exciting learning all about your new place, and not shoveling snow is a definite plus!

No farming here but in my vegetable garden I have started pulling the tomato plants.

My tomatoes are still producing, the vines are quite green yet. I've canned all I need so now it's just finding homes for the extras that I can't use fresh.

It hasn't frozen here yet, but did get down to 33 one morning just before sunrise.

Wow, Tom, you must be much warmer than me. My tomato leaves look fine still, but the fruit has pretty much just stopped - no noticeable ripening going on. I plan to pull them soon, we appear to be in a rainy patch that doesn't show any signs of letting up.

I have my plants all in the g'house. I have all but one client's plants picked up and put in. Well, I DO have to grub the sweet potato vines out of the planters that are on the pergola. Just need to find someplace to stick 9 of them. LOL They just really take off the 2nd year when it gets nice and warm out.

The Spousal Unit is helping the neighbor with harvest. He's running the catch cart and filling the semis when the guys get there.

We had a stretch of warm weather and lots of corn got harvested, but that's all turned to a rainy cold thing going on for the past couple days, and will continue for a couple more. Most likely will get some frost on Tues. night and that will stop things in the garden.

Guys didn't run yesterday; rain Sat. nite and some drizzly showers yesterday. They got the beans done on Friday, so it's "only" corn left. It will still take at least a couple of weeks to get done with that, even with 2 of the ginormous JD combines and 12 row heads. I had a gal contact me about a milking job Nov. 1-7. I had been putting her off till I kind of knew what was what re: the harvest, because if the weather is even semi-fit, we're going to take off for a few days in the RV. I asked DS#1 (who operates one of the combines) if they would be done in 2 weeks, because I knew I'd get a straight answer out of him. Nope. So, I took the milking job. This is the gal that milks at 3 am-3 pm. I am gonna DIE by day 7. LOL

I have all my plants moved to the g'house and all the client's plants picked up. Well, all but one, and she has not called me back. Grrrr............

I posted this over on the Grumpy thread about my "problem" with plant pickup at a client's place on Friday..........(copied and pasted here)

Went to pick up my first plant (as in 1, singular). I have to drive about 10 miles out of the way to get it. Down a long-ish driveway, trees on both sides. Nice house on the lake. As I drove in I saw the sailboat parked way far from where it was the last time and I thought "oh, how nice, it isn't beside the garage and it's alot smaller than I remember". Went just a bit farther.........holy crap on a cracker......they STILL had the big one, it was kind of by the garage, there were a few trees on the other side of it, and then a runabout boat. That was not the game-changer.........I'd have had room to back the trailer between the garage and the sailboat (would have taken a couple of tries to get myself enough room)...............BUT..................halfway between the sailboat and garage was a wellhead. And not nearly enough room in the front of the damn thing to even think about getting backed around. I was in and out of that stupid truck so many times to check how close I was to the garage I was ready to scream. I sent several "vent-texts" to the SU..........not that he could do anything, but more to just, well, vent. FINALLY got out but I'm afraid an oak branch took the brunt of it with the trailer. I drove in there at 10:41 and I drove out at 11:07. For one freekin' plant. I told the SU "That ain't gonna happen again, I am NEVER driving down there with that trailer."

All harvests are over around here - fields all empty and plowed under - except a little regrowth of sorghum because of all the recent rain. The floods of Harvey came in the middle of the cotton harvest so I imagine a lot of it was lost. I am ready for the growing season to be over. There is plenty of grass in the pastures to last the winter and I am tired of shredding the paddocks around the house and barn to keep things looking decent. I need to move the older cows to the NE (triangular) pasture today; it needs more grazing than the pensioner horses are providing - as soon as I check the hot wire which has been unreliable this summer. No heifers going in there!

We are finally having some more fall-like weather. The high this week is predicted to be 80; I thought we were stuck with 90s forever!
