Today is the 174th birthday of Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) and she is being featured as the Google Doodle for the day. She 'created some 400 gardens in the UK, Europe and America; her influence on garden design has been pervasive to this day'. She collected many species of plants for conservation, as well as for hardiness improvement. She traveled to many wonderful locations and designed many beautiful gardens. I think it is wonderful that she is being featured, on this her birthday. You can find many books, articles, and web pages about her online (for further reading), as well as many articles and books written by her.

"There is no spot of ground, however arid, bare or ugly, that cannot be tamed into such a state as may give an impression of beauty and delight."

Rolling on the floor laughing I have no proof that she did not go by that name. I believe that book was written in 1885, so it would be during her time.
