Mossy Saxifrage (Saxifraga Highlanderâ„¢ Red Shades)

How do you track down the original reports to be able to correctly name a plant?

Yes, and it's not the only one. Highlander is only a trade series, so our 'Highlander' entry also has to be fixed. Thanks for finding this. It's very difficult to track down original reports, so we usually use the combination of trade series and trade name to serve as the cultivar name until the "real" cultivar name turns up.

Thank you so much Zuzu. I have the S. Highlander 'Red Shades'. It really is an amazing plant. I need to go back in this years photo files and find the photos from this spring and summer.
Makes me want to get some of the others in the series.

I wish I could grow that type of saxifraga. I've bought it so many times, but it just doesn't like living in zone 9, even in the shade.

This one is suppose to be good in zone nine with sufficient water, and maybe in bright shade. It says they prefer sandy soil. Mine are planted in the raised bed filled with sandy loam. The saxafraga seem to love it. They are also planted in 1/2 day sun here.
I also read that they will only last about 5 years. But it says the can be divided to create more plants.

All I have is sandy loam, so that's not it. I can grow other saxifragas, but not the ones labeled Saxifraga x arendsii. Your Syngenta link gives zone 8 as the maximum and I believe it. Hilarious!

It can be confusing, many of the sites say zone 9. But I think you are right, they do love our zone 8. Smiling

I hope they also love zone 6!

I just got one, and the label says only "Highlander Red." That's so close, I'm assuming it's the same cultivar as 'Red Shades'. What do you think?

If your plant survived the winter, it should be blooming soon -- so sweet!

Mine does survive our relatively mild winters, and yes it is blooming up a storm right now. Really like this sweet little plant.
