It needs total dryness for dormancy. Either the soil has retained some moisture or the surrounding air is damp.

Will, I have about 34 of them in the basement, I do water a small amount once a month when I remember. I have found that it prevents "Shrinkage," of the bulbs. Never had one keep the leaves.

For best bloom results, Amaryllis need minimum 8 weeks of complete dryness. The leaves should yellow and die back completely and the outer covering of the bulb will turn brown and papery. That is as it should be. Any green growth during dormancy will seriously diminish the chances of good blooms. Resist the urge to water, even a little. Some folks "hide" their bulbs somewhere out of sight so they won't be tempted to add a little water!

I like to think of them as sleeping - and we all know it is bad manners to disturb anyone who is sleeping. Rolling my eyes.

Hey there, @WillC -- care to speculate on this? I have an amaryllis that just came out of dormancy - Royal Velvet -- AFTER 18 MONTHS. I kept thinking it must be dead, but the bulb remained firm, so I did not throw it away. And then suddenly this fall it started leafing out again. Looks healthy, not going to flower though. I bought the bulb online, it shipped from Iran. When it arrived, I saw there was no agriculture certificate with it, and also that there was soil still attached to the roots. A bit mortified, I gave the bulb a bleach water scrubbing to remove/kill any foreign organisms/bugs on it and then planted it in a pot. It did leaf out and grow, but did not bloom (not unexpected as the bulb was much smaller than I expected - actually it was a cluster of 4 small bulbs instead of the 1 big bulb I ordered). Then it went dormant for 18 months. Care to speculate on why?? Shrug!
