Callisia congesta is not a valid species name. I don't know whether it ever was. It isn't listed in any taxonomic database, but some sources list it as a synonym for Tradescantia congesta. When T. congesta became a synonym of T. virginiana, Callisia congesta went along for the ride.

What sites list Callisia congesta as a synonym of Tradescantia congesta, zuzu? I'm pretty confident that Callisia congesta is an invented horticultural name rather than a botanical one and thus not a synonym, in the taxonomic sense, of anything.

In any event, purpleinopp's and plantladylin's pictures don't belong in the Tradescantia virginiana entry.

Drat! I can't find the sources now, but I promise that I once did find a couple after a lengthy search. They were not taxonomic sources, and may have been conjecture more than anything else. I'm certain you're right that it's an invented name and that purpleinopp and plantladylin should move their "Callisia congesta" photos to the Callisia generic entry.

No, I didn't know of the name error but I don't think it's the Tradescantia virginiana. The plant I know as "Virginia Spiderwort" is clump forming and has very thin, slender, arching leaves, whereas the other one I purchased as Callisia congesta, has a trailing habit and broader leaves.

Not a match at all for the one I have called Callisia congesta, so I'm thinking it may be a different species of Callisia rather than Tradescantia.

How can a plant not have a name? It is clearly not C. fragrans or any of the other Callisia species I have, or have seen.

I have the day off work so will have time to move pics but what if I did not visit this site for a month for whatever reason? When the decision was made to consolidate these, I also think an effort should have been made to sort the pics into their new proper place(s), or at least notify owners of pics merged entry that they may no longer be in the correct place. If I hadn't happened to be tweaking my plant list, who knows how long these pics would have been sitting there, incorrectly representing a spiderwort species.

Taking this to a theoretical level, how can a plant not have a name?
