Has anyone grown Centranthus ruber (Jupiter's Beard) from seed?
After getting hooked on the Doc Martin series, I wanted to grow the Centranthus ruber
that grows (wild?) along the lanes in Port Isaac (aka "Portwenn"), Cornwall, UK.

I have seeds potted in Miracle Grow Seed Starting mix from 12/24, but they haven't germinated yet.
I barely covered them, and have kept them moist.
Also threw some here & there in the garden to see if they'd take there.

What is the best seed starter?
What are the best conditions for germinating C.ruber?
Did I start too early?
How long does it take to germinate?

If these don't work, I can get the plants at a local nursery in March. But hope the
seeds will pop up soon. Smiling

Maintenance of Perennial Beds.
Sorry for delay. Thought I had already sent my post.

I don't have experience raising species (wild form) Centranthus ruber from seed, but do have experience with ongoing self-seeding by C. ruber var. coccineus in the garden.

Apparently, at least in optimal growing conditions, the species can be a bad self-seeder even to the point of being considered invasive. I believe that variety coccineus is a bit tamer.

My experience with self-seeding and the variety is that the plant did seed around but not unmanageably. With an occasional weeding out of seedlings and of shearing dead blooms (deadheading), I've found the variety to be a useful and attractive addition to mixed perennial beds.

I'm suspecting that direct sowing in the garden could be successful.

Thanks, Charlie. Thumbs up

So far no seedlings germinated in Miracle Grow Seed Starter. Hope to see
some in the garden that I scattered about.

But if not, I'll get a plant from a nursery if necessary. Smiling
