Many epimediums color up beautifully in autumn, particularly so with the deciduous types (grandiflorum, youngianum), although evergreen and semi-evergreen types can also color up well. Intensity of autumn foliage color can depend on light levels, better light typically results in better color.

This woodland scene is taken on November 21, 2016. The bright yellow foliage is the species Epimedium brevicornu, on the left is E. x youngianum 'Capella' taking on orange tones, it can become a flaming cherry red if it gets enough direct sunshine.

Here's a view of E. x youngianum 'Capella' in a different location in my garden, Nov. 8, 2013, that shines with brilliant color. The green leaf Epimedium just behind it is E. sempervirens 'Candy Hearts', which has amazingly colorful spring foliage.



Using a variety of Epimedium in my New England garden, I can have a tapestry of autumn colors up until the New Year.
