I have an open planting bed that faces west and gets mostly afternoon sun (zone 5b). Used to have butterfly bushes there before they died off from a really cold winter. I want to try growing love lies bleeding this year. The description says it will get 3-5' tall. This is perfect but not sure how to get them there. I've never tried growing amaranthus before. Any advise to get them growing fast and strong?? Also, will they reseed easy?

@Crazypetunias, they will grow tall and strong and self-sows like crazy.
They are easy from seeds. The seeds and leaves are edible.

I have an old package of seeds if you want to try them.
The original seeds were the very first one I received from my first seed swap many many years ago.

easy to grow wonderful plant ,,, UNTIL it began to set seeds and the chipmunks destroyed them .. 2 years in a row !

oh my goodness, that is so pretty!

I love that plant. I put one on each side of my deck steps and they grew so big I had to trim the leaves so I could get up the steps.
And boy do they reseed!

Amaranthus are awesome to grow and grow so fast and furious. They come in great colors and make a beautiful floral display. They reseed every year in my zone. Really what could be any easier? Just follow the instructions on the seed packet and you are off and running. They will fade if left out in the sun too long after maturing. Keep leaves dry and water with soaker to eliminate leaf mildew.

I got a few started in a memorial garden this year. They aren't very big yet but I am hopeful. I have plenty of room for them to grow.
