Thread OP

Hi
Going into a second year at a new home in west michigan that has amazing plants. I am looking for ideas on where to start, how to encourage growth and beauty with what I have. How to know what to cut back?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nicole - welcome! Before you start cutting back, do you know what plants you do have? Shrubs? Perennials? Vines? Stuff like spring-blooming shrubs don't get cut back until after they bloom as most flower buds have already formed. Summer or fall blooming shrubs can be cut back in spring once the leaves have just started emerging. Cutting back or pruning shrubs can encourage a growth spurt which can be hazardous for them if we're still in for freezing weather.
