I sort of left you folks hanging as to if there was anything further to report from 21 February's Little Lehigh hike.
Well, after getting the less than great Bluejay image just past Klein's Bridge, nothing noteworthy had showed up by the time I reached Fish Hatchery Road ( as far as I have gone in the past). However, frustrated by the lack of results, I pressed on upstream into unexplored territory (for me that is) for another half mile or so. The first thing I noticed was a new spring:
Thumb of 2018-03-02/marsrover/031f7f Thumb of 2018-03-02/marsrover/c862dd
Although there wasn't a real trail, I continued on until the embankment from Keystone Road precluded any further progress. However, just at that point, fate took pity on me and intervened in the form of several Canada Geese, which graciously posed for me:

I have previously not been too fond of geese (they are messy birds), but I did have to thank these guys for their support.
As I headed back downstream, just before reaching Fish Hatchery Road again, I glanced skyward and noticed another hawk at altitude:

By the way, has anyone determined what he UFFO was in my last post? Shrug!
And, did I spot anything else before getting back home? Rolling my eyes.

Carole, Thumbs up Love all the ducks; oh my ... that Hardhead ... those eyes! Lovey dubby Cute shot of the Wood Duck standing on one leg and the Chestnut Teal is really stunning!

Robert, great shots! I love Canadian Geese; possibly because we don't see them very often down here. Green Grin! the expression on the one in photo #4 needs a caption like "Whatcha looking at?" Photo #6, of the pair in with the sun reflecting on the water is so nice! Is that neat Hawk the Red-tailed? They are a lot larger than the Red-shouldered that we have so many of here. The Red-tailed is found here too but I rarely see them. I'll have to go back and look at your last post again with the UFFO.

I do believe that it is a Red Tailed Hawk. I rarely see any other type (a Cooper's Hawk once) along the Little Lehigh. Variety is not the Parkway's strong point! Sighing!

Robert, I thought because of the size and the tail that it might be the Red-tailed Hawk!

By the way .... I went back to the February thread and took a look at your UFF and I really don't know what bird that is. At first I thought it looked a bit like a female Pine Siskin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... but they have pointed bills and I don't their bills are as thick as the bird in your photo. Do you recall if the bill was crossed? I wonder if it could be a female or juvenile Red Crossbill?

I looked at your reference images, and also at the Cornell web-pages for the candidates you proposed. They didn't seem to match the UFFO. In particular, the "lighting stripe behind the eyes and the black bill seemed off the mark. Of course, if I was wiser, I wouldn't have to ask what it was in the first place! Shrug! Sighing!

@marsrover nice that you explored a little bit of new territory Robert; great Canada Geese as a result and the hawk.

Take your pick Robert amongst these Pacific Black ducks, just for something new.

@neverdone, I'm so glad that WP was not breakfast for the (Cooper's?) Hawk! I know it's all part of nature and hawks have to eat too but gee ... I wish they had a preference for squirrels rather than birds. Although I like to watch squirrels and their funny antics, there are more squirrels to spare. Green Grin!

@plantladylin that all happened crazy fast. I didn't know that hawk came in , let alone knew I got a shot of him. If he would have gotten ol' WP, at least it would have been over quick. I'm glad WP is ok. BTW ,.love that titmouse! Thank You!
