Hey all, just checking to see how many of you are growing tender succulents indoors during the winter months?

He would love to know which of the tender succulents are doing well for you indoors. We all know that they also like to go outside once the weather becomes warm enough.
What are your suggestions on species or cultivars that will do good in dish like gardens?
This is one that did very well for me for a number of years, until I left for a one month vacation.

I'm not much help on the tender succulents. I do grow a few indoors, never have put them outside. Haworthia fasciata; I'm on the second round of pups from the original mother. It would probably work good in a dish garden. It has dark green color and interesting texture. Very slow to grow.

Sedum adolphii, again, it stays inside under my lights.

I also have several species of Echeverias inside under lights.

I have had all o0f these for several years. The Haworthia for probably seven or eight years.

Agree any haworthia is going to be good, slow growing so you want to place a plant which already is the right size for the pot! Sedevaria (hybrid of sedum aldolphii and echevaria)
other tender sedum (from Mexico and central america) also Gasteria grow faster than haworthia

Lynn, are these in the house proper, or in the conservatory?
I wouldn't try in my house since I don't have much in the way of southern exposed window space.
I do however keep various Agaves in my little greenhouse. Those are not particularly tender but do need protection from sub 20F weather and prolonged moisture.

The tenderest succulent I have is my Easter Lily Cactus (Echinopsis oxygona) which is front-left on the plywood. The little guy to his right is extremely cold hardy but must be kept dry, dry, dry. They're out this morning for some winter sunshine, which is exactly where I am now headed.

Jade plants do really well inside close to an east or west window. Here are some pics. I water them moderately, when the soil is dry to 1/2" or so.

I have 4 other jades that stay inside year round.

I grew haworthia, jade and a small sedum many years ago. Not many house plants cared by me in the Winter. I see many people that come to the nursery thinking all succulents need to be indoors in Winter and still bring the hardy plants in even though I tell them they do much better outside. I cut these stones and plant them with all manner of hardy sedum and sempervivum. This year I want to buy plugs of tender plants that will survive indoors. So different texture, colors and sizes.

Here's some of my indoor succulents.











I don't keep many names on these, I save that madness for my semps. Just enjoy them. I chatted with Robin at the last clinic about succulents not doing well in my very bright south facing windoes. His reply was that the new windows these days filter out most of what a plant needs. Thought that was interesting. These are always on a rotation as they die. Winter is very hard on them in Washington state.

These were photographed in September. They are under snow or covered in the greenhouse now and don't look as vibrant.

Tim, I don't think I want to bring an agave indoors, I don't think they would work in a dish garden.
But some of your tiny cacti would work.

Another easy one that is fairly small and the blooms are beautiful. It does really well indoors.

I'd been looking at Mountain Crest's plugs as a way to go.

Hi Lynn, my growing area is different than yours so my Crassulas, Aeoniums, Haworthias and Echeverias are grown outdoors even when it rains here this winter. As long as our outdoors temps are staying mostly in the 30F at its lowest, they survive well, plus making the media very well draining by making sure all containers have pumice to aid in drainage. The critical time I do see real stress and damage is when it starts going in the mid to low 20F. I think as long as the plants have been prepared well prior to the onset of cold weather conditions, they get properly winter hardened and endures our mild winter conditions. It is a totally different scenario if the plant has been grown always indoors, bringing them out at this time will just just be a death sentence since they have not been acclimated gradually to the warm to cold conditions. and vice versa.

As to other tender succulents that I have to bring indoors during the winter season, some of them are Cotyledon tomentosa or Bear Paw succulent, Monoadenium ritchei, Senecio articulatus, Lithops, Schlumbergeras and most of my cacti which are at this time in dormancy mode.

Tarev, you list some more great choices for indoor containers that can go outdoors in warm weather. I grew the Bear Paw for about 4 years before I forgot to bring it indoors for winter and killed it.

Many of my houseplants and cacti/succulents go out when its warm enough and come in when temps drop in fall.

I brought these inside in late October - waiting for their winter placements.

Wow, that is a lot of house plants. I remember when I used to do that.

Here are some of my indoor succulents. I keep them inside all year as I don't want to bring any bugs inside in the winter. If I know the names, they're on the pictures. The first couple are some small aloes, but NOIDS.

Great examples Chris. And all look so healthy. What kind of light are they given in your home?
