I made two crosses last year just to see if I could make it work. I got seeds from both crosses. I looked up some daylily seed starting videos on Youtube, and did the stratification thing, and then put them in a damp medium and returned them in the fridge. They have been in there for about 6 weeks, and now some of them are showing a root. Should I plant them all now? or just plant the ones that have the root showing? Should I take them out of the fridge? Any help would be appreciated. It's kind of exciting, and I'm just doing this as an experiment, but I don't want to botch it up. Smiling

They won't necessarily all sprout at once, but they're definitely ready for some warmth and light. Are you planning on sowing them indoors under lights?

Thanks for your response. I have a nice area with a South exposed window. It's gets sunny and warm outside now during some days so I can take them out into the sun to harden them off as they get larger.

That'll work. Even when they're small, they'll appreciate all the sun they can get, so try to get them outdoors in full sun every day you can. What you don't want to do is let them grow soft and weak behind glass in a warm house, develop long, thin, pale leaves and a corresponding small crown, and then put them outside. I don't imagine you'll have to worry too much about intense sun this time of year.

Once you take them out of the fridge they should all germinate fairly quickly at room temperature since they've been stratified to break seed dormancy. BTW I'm wondering what you meant by "the stratification thing" - putting them in damp medium in the fridge would be considered stratification.

Well, somewhere I read that they should be stored dry in a fridge first, and then later when you want them to start germinating, put them in a damp medium. Not sure where I read that, maybe saw it on a video, or if it even needed to be done. At least it didn't seem to hurt them. Smiling

Now I see what you mean. Stratification is the damp medium in the fridge part. Storage dry in the fridge is just storage. Stratification is to break seed dormancy by simulating winter. For it to work the seeds have to have enough internal moisture, hence the damp medium while chilling. After 4-6 weeks of damp chilling (winter) in the fridge, all the seeds are taken out of the fridge and started at room temperature (spring). For some reason this method is sometimes misinterpreted as leaving them in the fridge until they germinate.

Plants have adapted methods of preventing seedling loss due to adverse environmental conditions by not germinating until they've been through a period of cold followed by warmer temperatures, then they "think" they are safe for a long time until the next winter because they just had one. If daylily seeds are not damp chilled (stratified) before planting they can germinate erratically, and it can be weeks or months before all germinate.

It is like eating one potato chip!

I saw a cute seed sowing idea on YouTube. Keep your round Japanese take out bowls for crosses. Just drill drain holes, add soil and seeds. Water then put the top on for a week and then after they sprout you can use it on the bottom to catch excess moisture. I need to find some more bowls lol Good Luck
