900 dollars a plant! Wow!
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

My thought exactly! I did a double-take when I saw that $900 price, thinking I'd seen it wrong. The other Longwood varieties are quite pricey too but Sunset was the most expensive.

After going to the Clivia Society show and taking lots of photos, I asked a society representative about growing Clivias. He made it sound fairly doable, so I went to Longwood's gift shop where Clivia plants are sold. To my amazement, the cheapest Clivia plants were $299.00, so I decided I would just continue to visit the Clivia plants which are all over Longwood's Conservatory and not try to grow them myself.

It would be interesting to know why they are so expensive!

I know Clivias are slow-growing, which is probably why divisions of excellent plants are so pricey. You could always try a few immature seedlings (generally several years from blooming), though, from a cross of two good plants, which should be much cheaper.

I visited Longwood Gardens today and am happy to report that there were smaller Clivia plants in bloom in the gift shop, priced at $49 or $89. I didn't take note of the cultivars, but the flowers were orange.
