A few of my seeds are sending out a root. I have them in a wet paper towel in a plastic bag. It's only about the 3rd day. I don't remember them starting that fast last time. Guess I better keep a journal so I remember. Think I'll plant the ones with a root right away.

Arlene, you should be able to keep them alive over winter with some mulch right?

@farmerdill, i noticed you have some lulu artichokes in your garden. Can you tell me how they're doing? I got six last summer, and though i felt i jumped through hoops to protect them, there is not a sign of them now. Don't know if they will grow back this spring. My son in CA says his plants are very large, and did not die back either in the summer or winter. Do you have other varieties you can suggest?
Thank You!

Yes I did comment on DG about Lulu artichokes. I regularly update plantfiles when something new comes out. Sort of take it as a personal challenge, but unless it specifies grown by me, it is an information only comment. I know about 15000 varieties of vegetables but I have personally grown only about 600 of them. I am working on it, but age is slowing me fast.

I put a dozen of the seeds that had sent out a root in pots today. We'll see if more seeds germinate, but if not, I should have enough anyway.

Hurray! Looks like 8 of the little guys are showing themselves at the time, so if I can keep them alive I should have some to plant this spring. 4 more seeds have roots growing, so I can plant them too.

Now I have 15! Probably too many, but I can not through out a plant! *Blush* So most likely I'll have too many if they all live, and if I'm lucky can eat artichokes until I'm sick of them, but most likely I won't get too many. The last time I had 4 or 5 if I remember from 7 plants that survived, and I left one to go to seed, but I waited to long, and it froze before it could mature.

I have 16 sprouting Artichokes now, but it looks like 3 of them are albino's No green at all! Has anyone else seen that in artichokes? They no doubt will die, but I still have enough.

I bought a small artichoke plant a year or so ago and it actually produced a small artichoke. It was just a whim as I love to eat them. I don't have room for them but wanted to give it a try in a pot. Too easy to go to the store and buy one if I get the craving.

I had much better germination this year then I did the last time I grew them. This year I put them in a wet paper towel in a plastic bag and kept them close to the wood stove where they were aways warm. When they sent out a root, I'd plant them. They came up in a day or two. I had to change the paper towel often to avoid mold.

I ended up with 12 artichoke babies, I had 4 albino's that of course died. The second leaves are just starting to come out. Fun to have something growing anyway. Hilarious! I do have a few varieties of iris seedlings coming up too.
