Hello...

For the past 10 or so years, I have been trying to collect all of the daylily cultivars that were registered by Steve Moldovan and/or Roy Woodhall for an historical garden in NW Ohio. There are roughly 550 of these plants, and presently, all but about 100 are growing in the garden.

The Moldovan and Woodhall daylilies date from the early 1960s to 2011, and sadly, I am coming to terms with the fact that many of these "missing" 100 plants may be lost to time. However, I still am locating some of these plants one at a time in gardens all across the USA and Canada. Just in the past month, I have located two in a garden in Nova Scotia.

Would you please check your gardens to see if you might be growing any of the following "missing" Moldovan and/or Woodhall cultivars. If you are growing even one of these or know someone who is, please contact me!

Thank you VERY much for your assistance!

Mike, I'm going to suggest we move your thread to the Daylilies forum. If anyone has any of those cultivars, the dedicated Daylily nuts over there will.

Have you tried searching the Lily Auction, also?

I have Turkish Turban, one of the first I purchased about ten years ago as a catalog order from Roots and Rhizomes. I checked their latest catalog, but it is not offered now. I will look at our plant and see if some fans can be spared. This is a real favorite of mine, lovely subtle colors.

Hello. I found this thread entirely by accident and can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am that you have been working on a historical garden of Steve Moldovan and Roy Woodhall daylilies. I am Steve Moldovan's niece, oldest daughter of his younger brother Richard Moldovan. Unfortunately, as an adult I resided in south Florida and was unable to grow any daylilies. Now that he and both Roy have passed, I am living in eastern Tennessee in a climate where they do quite well. As funds permit, I too have been trying to purchase some of his cultivars that are still available. On a recent trip to Ohio, I had hoped that possibly the gardens might still possibly be there--albeit in limited form--however, was quite dismayed to find that it looked like the local flora had been allowed to take over. I am hoping please that maybe you can be of help to me. I would love to have my namesake, Monica Ann, in my garden--the cultivar Steve and Orville Fay introduced in the 60's. Do you by chance have it? If so, I would love to have a fan or two and would be more than happy to purchase it from you. If not, I would still love to hear from you and hopefully obtain an invite to come see your garden at some future date. After Steve and Roy's passing, I've been so concerned that all their hard work and dedication to Hemerocallis would be lost to time and am relieved to now know that will not be the case. I hope to hear from you and thank you so very much for what you have done. Best regards, Monica Moldovan MacLeod

Monica, I'm sure you realize that this thread is over 6 years old?

I think your best bet to trace down as many of your Moldovan daylilies as possible is to contact Mike Anders @mfanders directly, since he's the originator of this thread. You can "tree mail" him privately on this forum using the little blue envelope at the top right of the screen.

Even if the garden is no longer being maintained, he will very likely know where many of the daylilies from it have gone. He even gives his address at the end of his initial post, so seems like he won't mind being contacted by snail mail if this attempt fails through NGA.

That being said, there are so many thousands of daylily cultivars, but the best ones do carry on for many years. People keep them in their gardens, and pass divisions along to family and friends. The problem becomes "do we know the name of that one I got from Aunt Mary?"

I see in a post above that @Avedon had Turkish Turban as one of her favorites back in 2018 and she is still active on this daylily forum. Also @Dennis616 found 3 cultivars listed online for sale above.

South Seas may be the most popular Moldovan cultivar these days and is readily available in commerce. Others likely to be available include [but not limited to] Pretty Woman, Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Salieri. Good luck on your quest.

I know Mike as he is in my daylily club. He was able to dig quite a few of Steve's seedlings that were never named, and has a very extensive collection. He has told me that the older plants from the 60's were the ones he was having problems with finding. If he can help you, he will!
