My son and I want to create a gnome village at the base of a tree in our front yard. Do we need to keep it in some kind of container or would be be OK just setting it up in the dirt? I plant to plant several mini plants to go with it.

I think in the ground would be wonderful, if you do a search on line you can find hundreds of ideas.
