I have exuberant Black and Blue and Hot Lips salvia that is great for hummers but I needs suggestions for shorter more compact salvia. Not particularly looking for hummer plants on these though. I have Evolution 'White'.

Kabby I have Lyreleaf Sage (Salvia lyrata 'Purple Volcano') it stays low and blooms for a long time. The leaves are real pretty so even not in bloom it's nice...mine reseeds pretty easy but not invasive. I just dig up the volunteers and pot them up or give them away. https://www.google.com/search?...

Salvia lyrata is native to our area. It's very cute during its short bloom in spring but reseeds with abandon. They don't bloom here for very long because the heat causes them to shift into cleistogamous mode. In fact, "normal" people (not Salvia-loving gardeners) just consider it a lawn weed. I have a solid, huge patch (at least 25' x 20') of thousands of plants in the backyard lawn that I let bloom and then mow back. It was stunning this year and I planned to share a photo. However, my very kind neighbor started to help me out by mowing when I was too sick to do it last year. Yep, I looked outside yesterday and he had mowed them all down! I can't complain, though, because his help has been a godsend. The yard would be an absolute jungle otherwise.

Have you tried the "Summer Jewel" series of Salvia coccinea? They stay shorter than the old forms. They will reseed some but not like S. lyrata.

I couldn't think of any short and tame salvia, but the Summer Jewel series is a good idea. Thanks Danita for suggesting them!

Ronnie I am so sorry, I was watching the news last week and it KEPT snowing Midwest and Northeast. We had a wonderful rain last night and I used mosquito spray today for only the 2nd time this yr. But perhaps in the fall if your offer still stands? Thank you either way!

Danita I wintersowed for the first time this yr and between trades and buying I have a 2" seed notebook bulging at the seams. Whistling Rolling my eyes. But yet I'm going to ease on over to Harris... 😁
I wsed Lady In Red salvia, it's doing great.
