I am very excited today, I have my first seedling bloom. Don't know the cross, but she is beautiful.



I have been pollinating my own flowers this year for the seeds. This morning when I went out to do that, this flower did not have any pollen, since I don't know the names and types of my flowers, my first bloom I use the pollen from that flower to pollinate it. Other blooms I am mixing the pollen from another flower. Is it normal to get a flower with no pollen?

It can be normal not to get pollen on some cultivars of daylilies. It can also be that the pollen just isn't ready yet. I have several daylilies that won't give me pollen until mid-morning when I usually do my crosses early morning. The good news is that I've gotten pods after doing late afternoon crosses (if the pollen still looks good). I just check first to make sure the bees haven't pollinated the flower first!

Pollinating is new to me, I watched some videos on it, and the man said to do it before it was 75 degrees outside. And it hits 75 at 8am here, so I must get out there early to do it.

I will say more crosses take when it isn't horribly hot out. But I do get some. Humidity is more the issue for me though. And if it rains not much takes. Honestly, I can't ever predict which day will have the most pods take. There are trends but I always get a day where the odds are low and everything takes. And some perfect days nothing takes. Go figure!

I think here the the temp. recommended would be 85 deg. F. and I have done some up in the 90's. I have read dips. can cross at higher temps that Tets. normally. I would do almost no crosses if I had to do them by the 75 deg. cutoff. It seems most of my pollen I have tried to use is not ready till at least 9:30 so I end up doing crosses up to about 11:00.

After reading those post I went back out and checked the one flower, and it had pollen, so I am glad I can pollinate the flowers later in day also.

How long will it take before I know if it was successful?

Two or three days I would think.

I have 7 seed pods so far. And some of my seedlings are already clumping, I sure hope to see a few bloom this year, so far there are no scape's on any of them. The one that bloom this year, was planted last year.

Man what a week, I have not been home in almost a week. Went 42 hours with no sleep, but it was worth it to see my grandson make his entrance into the world. Meet Zeke everyone, it won't be long and he will be helping his mimi plant and tend to the daylilies.

I have over 50 seed pods so far, and 1 proliferation. I really hope each pod has seeds in them, I will be planting them right before winter and let mother nature take control of them.
