I often add events because there are many that take place in my general area. My question has to do with adding events that are related to garden clubs. My thinking is this. If all I know about a garden club is that (for example) it meets the last Sunday of every month at a certain place and time, then it doesn't make sense to add this to the Calendar. However, if I happen to know the details of a club's meeting, as in it's addressing an interesting/informative topic, or will be hosting the popular/interesting/informative guest speaker Dave W, then I would think it would be a good addition to the Calendar.

Did that make sense and if so, are there any actual guidelines?

Now for my suggestion (not related to my question). I think that the instructions for adding an event should include a polite request to see if the event has already been added. (I know. Not everyone reads instructions.) I'm bringing this up because I noticed that someone recently created some duplicates. I don't know if this happens very often. If it doesn't, then never mind.

How would one check for duplicates? I've never really given that any thought, but can see that it would be good to not do so. I recently submitted a duplicate event (hit the 'go' button twice I guess) and was a bit unclear how to correct it. In this instance, it would have been nice to have received something along the lines of 'you already submitted this' with the option to not do so again. I think I get that on posts or something now and again.

I happened to see that a member added an event that was the same as one I'd previously entered. He did an abbreviated version, but nonetheless it was the same event. I also noticed that this same member duplicated one of his own events. I guess I worry that he'll continue this pattern. Maybe I'm overly paranoid.

@dave, is it possible to add a check so that when a member adds an event to the calendar, it checks to see if there is already one approximately the same time and place - if so, the member could be asked "Did you mean <this event>?"

Might cut down the duplicates tx_flower_child is seeing.

And it would also be good to be able to delete an event. Maybe that already exists, but I didn't easily find it. I did put in one event twice (operator error) and don't know how to remove one.

Well, no answer from the powers that be. We now are at the receiving end -- today there were 3 identical events listed. Helllooo.

I saw those. If they're the same ones, they were poorly done. Maybe the member was trying to correct.

I admit that I add a lot but I live in a metropolitan area that has a lot of events, especially now. However I noticed that there's one member who doesn't live in Texas but has added events from now until forever (ok. exaggeration.) in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and cities all over the U.S. Plus he's added many that run from now to the end of the year. Since we promote adding events as a way to earn acorns, I doubt if there's many events for other members, especially new members, left to add.

Plus it does make it hard to do certain searches.

Ok. Enough said. Personal gripe.

It's perfectly ok to add gardening events that aren't in your area. There are plenty of them in every state.

I don't care about the acorns, but do appreciate the event listings.

I do love the events, but since I haven't been adding any, the events nearest me are always in Colorado, Texas or California.

Are acorns awarded for each event posted? It looks to me like some members might be abusing this by posting the same event over and over, possibly to get a nut? There seems to be more folks who are wanting those nuts so bad for the raffles they will post the easy stuff to get them, while not necessarily adding to the usefulness of the database. I don't really expect any response from the powers that be on this. They seem to have gone on vacation.

I've been wondering and thinking the same, Lauri. Yesterday there were duplicates on the plant comments. I thought the system wouldn't allow that?

I'm not sure which administrator @Dave @Jon @Trish handles the Calendar of Events but yes, it seems that page https://garden.org/apps/events... needs a bit of attention regarding duplicates, etc. Maybe we need a volunteer "Moderator" for that area of the site?

To answer someone's question, adding an event gives you 5 nuts. And as stated earlier, I tend to add a lot this time of year.

I have entered my local plant swap to the calendar of events a few times but have never actually looked at the NGA events calendar.

I have a question, please. Why is the Calendar of Events not in some kind of calendar form? (Or maybe it is and I just cannot find it.)

For example, if I were planning on visiting Tucson, Arizona during a certain week, I'd like to be able to see that there are X-many events in that area so I have a chance to plan my schedule around the event.

My words don't explain it very well so I looked online for an example. Here is the page for the Dallas Symphony. There is a calendar you can click on each date and a popup shows which event(s) occur on that date.
