This stem was cut about 3-4 weeks ago, placed in a couple inches of water. It had 5 leaves but 3 of them were absorbed.

Doing the 1st stem was so fun, I did another. Now performing hardiness experiment.

I have propagated these before by cane division....chopping a length of cane into pieces and laying them half buried in soil, watering lightly. Grows a whole new plant. Costus gingers also can be propagated like that, and Ti leaves

The rooted stems are still alive, some still in the jars of water. Hardiness experiments failed although I didn't ground the stems until Sept. Maybe if they had had a few more months to get rooted in well...

Another stem that had rooted in water. Looked so much like the pics above, no need to get another pic of that. Grounded "as annual" although it's welcome to survive if if feels like it. I'll probably cut it off @ soil level when frost threatens and keep it in water until spring, re-ground, repeat cut in the fall, etc... A pot of this takes up so much room because w/o a big pot, it's too top-heavy. I've decided that's the easiest way to keep some tropical plants w/o bothering with a potted phase, due to space issues over winter. Not saying one thing is inherently superior, just what is helping me keep the most number of plants inside for a few months as survival, not display specimens.

Off to a much better start than any potted individual I've had. Time to start eyeing a pot for it to move into to come inside for winter. Everything else in the pic was propagated too.
