Can someone tell me what happens if you try to transplant a daylily clump that already has its buds? There are some in my garden, that after I saw the first bloom, I decided I'd like to give to my niece because I don't love them and I want to make room for some new daylilies I am getting. If she plants them ASAP and keeps them well watered for a while, will they continue to bloom, or are they wrecked for this season? Thanks for your help!

I have often moved daylilies in bud and they do just fine. You shouldn't have any problem.

Just leave as much soil with the clump as you can.

Just try to dig far enough away from root and take as much soil as you can with it sometimes they dont skip a beat sometimes half will droop .
Every home needs a daylily, and every daylily needs a home.

As well as keeping as much soil as you can, it also helps to cut back the foliage somewhat while leaving the scapes. I've found the scapes less likely to abort if I do that.

I have bought budded and blooming plants from two different farms who routinely just dig them up and put them in plastic bags for transport. None have ever failed. As others have said, though, the more dirt the better.

I would suggest putting it in a growers pot with all the dirt the pot will hold. If it's to big for a #3 pot, you should divide it.

Very sound advice. But anytime a daylily in bud is moved, there is a risk of bud drop. It happens.
