I bought this daylily about 5-6 years ago. It never blooms a lot, but I do love it. Problem is, it appears to be getting smaller every year. It's in a flower bed where other things are flourishing fine, including peonies. It gets a bit of store bought manure added to the topsoil every year. I use Miracle Grow feeder for all my plants. I don't let the dying flowers stay on the plant too long.
Sad What can I do to help this daylily??

Have the number of fans grown significantly...as well as the overall size of the plant? Have you considered splitting it if so?

No, they haven't. Everything has shrunk. The number of fans and the length of the leaves in general.

It may be an evergreen. They are mostly suited to the south. I have several evergreen ones that have proved to be hardy, but I have lost several over the years. Dormant or semi evergreen are better suited to the north. There will always be exceptions due to the cross breeding. The evergreens have much thinner foliage. If you know the name it should be possible to look it up and find out which category it belongs to.

It is Jolyene Nichole, an Evergreen. What does that mean in daylilies? I thought that would be a good thing.

It wants to grow whenever the weather seems right. It will emerge early and get knocked back by frosts. You will be successful with it only by giving it extra protection during the winter and spring.

Good thinking, Gary...I hadn't considered that.

Connie mine is a big clump here in zone five. Your extreme winter temperature is like Gary said is more than she can take. Sighing!

Sad Sad I did dig it up a few weeks ago and found a lot of dead roots, but also found five separate (but tiny) fans. Replanted those all in separate spots. Hoping some of those will survive for next year.

Connie, I don't know if this will help too, but I really LOVE Miracle Gro Quick Start!! I first use it on my daylily seedlings when I start them in cups, and I have been amazed at the number of roots in those cups when I go to plant them in the garden 6-8 months later. (It actually took me longer to plant them after I started using Quick Start, because I had to stop and unwind all the roots in the cup and spread them out before I could plant them, and that NEVER happened before I started using the stuff!) And I usually only mix it half strength while they're still in the cups. Once they are in the garden , I try to use it full strength (using the bottles of it that attach to the Miracle Gro sprayer that attaches to your hose), twice during the growing season. My fans multiply MUCH more quickly, and so I get more blooms, and I get them sooner. I don't bother using it on my well est. clumps, but I do use it on the newer ones I esp. love and want to multiply a lot.
