Hi, I need help to understand my brugmansias. Relatively young leaves turns yellowish, and the fell off (look at the pictures). New leaves looks dark green and healthy. I have tried with much water and less water. Much fertilizer, and just water. Any suggestions what to do?

Mine have always done the same thing, and I haven't figured out why. They drop a lot of leaves and look ratty, but it doesn't seem to hurt their blooming when they are old enough. They still bloom like crazy. Insects are always chewing on mine, so the leaves really look bad.

Always check for spider mites if your leaves start looking yellowish. Run the leaves between your thumb and finger, and if the fingers come away reddish looking then you have mites.

You can keep spider mites pretty much under control just by spraying the plant with water every few days. They hate moisture, love it when it's warm and dry.

Just from my experience, it's almost impossible to over-water or over fertilize Brugmansia. They're hungry thirsty beasts. I water mine generously unless we've had steady, really heavy rain.

I have to water mine every day. They're all in pots and they start wilting if I skip a day. I do get occasional yellow leaves, and just pull them off. I've had beetles attack the plants, but so far I've not had the spider mites.

Karen, that is why I stopped growing Brugs. Had some real nice one and how I remember the wonderful smell. I miss it a lot almost ordered one the other day. Light in what is left in my brain came on and remembered the battle I had with Spider Mite on them, never ending fight.

Aw, that's a shame. Did they get on the brugs in the greenhouse or outside? I have only had spider mites once, and it was on my plumerias in the greenhouse.

Karen, both places it was an uphill battle. But I think back now and may have let them get just to big to keep a good eye on them.

That Bonide Horticultural Spray that you can get from Amazon really works for mites, scale, and most other insects. You need to use it a few times to get them all, but using it has really cleaned up my greenhouse. I put an extra fan in that goes 24 hours a day too. My previous fans were all solar. The extra circulation has helped a lot.

Karen, I have used the spray for a long time. Due to the fact my first true love of plants are Miniature Roses, and I used it for years on them. As for the fan in my GH the fans run 24/7 all year long, high in warmer months and low in cooler months.
But I know the Brugs were like a magnet for those darn spider mites. I had one Plumeria that started getting them this year puled it away from the others and sprayed it a few times looks good now.
