By accident, I crossed pollen from daylilies having a converted tet as a parent to diploid daylilies. I did not think that these would form pods but two dip daylilies that I crossed by mistake are now showing pods from these crosses. The pods are developing normally getting bigger by the day. Does anyone have this experience? If you do, are the seeds from these pods viable?

Here is info on my crosses.
Shards of Kryptonite (dip) X Princess Syndrome x (Tet RFK x Vikki1)
Brookwood Softly Pink (dip) X Sea Change [(Applique Prism x Midnight Castle) x Tet. Emerald Starburst]

It is quite normal for a diploid that has been pollinated with pollen from a tetraploid to successfully set a pod.

Most of those pods only last about seven to ten days. But it is quite normal for those pods to last for many weeks. They may even last long enough to mature. If the pods do mature they usually do not have normal looking seeds inside them. If there are normal looking seeds inside them then they usually do not germinate.

However, diploid x tetraploid crosses and tetraploid x diploid crosses will sometimes produce good seeds and seedlings. Those seedlings are typically triploids.

Or it is also possible that insects also pollinated the diploid flowers and any seeds that develop are from natural pollinations and are diploid.

@admmad Thanks Maurice. From what you wrote, I think this is what you said. That there is some probability that these seeds may mature and may also be viable because this happened before with other dips and tets that did not contain a parent that went through conversion. And that you don't believe that the tet conversion parent has anything to do with its ability to cross pollinate. Do I understand you right?

You are welcome.

Correct.

The second cross indicates that the tet conversion parent is a grandparent. That it was converted does not have anything specific to do with the success or failure of the dip x tet cross. However, simply for being a grandparent it may have something to do with the failure or success of the cross as does any other daylily in the ancestry.

The first cross:
Shards of Kryptonite (dip) X Princess Syndrome x (Tet RFK x Vikki1)
is more difficult to interpret.

Princess Syndrome (Davisson-J., 2014)

(Lotus Position × Davi's Dilemma)

Lotus Position (Rice-J., 2007)
height 38 in.(97 cm), bloom 6 in.(15 cm), season EM, Rebloom, Evergreen, Tetraploid, Reddish burgundy with large cream watermark. (Science of Mind × Angel's Braid)

Davi's Dilemma (Davisson-J., 2011)
height 41 in.(104 cm), bloom 10 in.(25 cm), season M, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, Fragrant, 26 buds, 5 branches, Unusual Form Crispate, Rose pink with a pale pink watermark and fine white edges. (sdlg × Webster's Pink Wonder)
